The next band performance for grades 5-12 is the most important of the year: the annual Joy of Music Fundraiser on Friday, March 8th.  This event is quite different from our other concerts and will take place at Basalt High School, NOT BMS.  Please take a few minutes to read through the following information, especially if you are new to the Basalt Band Program.  Thank you!

 

Joy of Music - What is it?
The Joy of Music is a very special event that is unique to Basalt.  This event provides the vast majority of funds for the Basalt Band Program.  The event is a dinner, a fundraiser, a performance, and a celebration of music in our schools.  

 

Admission
Admission into Joy of Music includes dinner and you’ll hear tons of great performances by our brave young musicians who play in small ensembles all night long.  Admission costs are: $15 for adults, $10 for students, and free for children under 5 years of age. Band students do NOT need to pay to get into the event since they’re required to be there.  However, they do need to pay $10 if they choose to eat. Please remember that many schools charge admission for ALL of their concerts throughout the year. We only charge for this one event AND it gets you a catered dinner. This year, dinner will be provided by Al Kokish from Custom Catering!  The menu will include Chicken Cacciatore, Pasta Primavera, and Caesar Salad.  Gluten free and dairy free options will be available. 

 

Location and Time
Joy of Music will take place at BASALT HIGH SCHOOL in the Commons Room, which is right inside the main entrance.  The event will run from approximately 5-8:30pm. In the coming weeks, Mr. Lenio will be sending out a detailed schedule showing what time each student will perform.  The atmosphere at Joy of Music is very different from our regular concerts. There will be eating, mingling, auctions, hopefully some dancing, and, of course, great music!  You do not need to stay for the entirety of the evening. However, you should not be bringing your son/daughter to perform and then running out the door as soon as they're done.  Please take some time to listen to other groups. Younger students and their parents should be sure to listen to some older musicians, especially the BHS StreetHorns! Joy of Music is all about celebrating our amazing community of young musicians.  

 

Student Performance Schedule & Information
The Joy of Music begins at 5pm and the last performance will be at about 8:30pm. 

  • The Schedule: As you look at the schedule, you will see that your child has a Performance Time and a Warm-up Time.  Students should arrive at BHS AT LEAST 20 minutes prior to their Warm-up Time. PLEASE NOTE: This schedule is subject to change.  Mr. Lenio does his darnedest to get it right the first time, but with 300+ band students it is easy to accidentally leave a name/group off of the schedule. He has also tried to keep siblings’ performances relatively close to each other. Students will be given hard copies of the schedule in band class later this week.   •  When students arrive: Arriving students should go to the "Instrument Case Rooms".  There will be one for woodwind instruments and one for brass.  They put their instruments together here, close up their case, and neatly stack it.  Then, their group goes to their assigned "Warm-up Room". There are two Warm-up Rooms labelled A and B.  Each group has 8 minutes in the room to warm up, tune, and play through their song. After their 8 minute time slot is up, they will be escorted to the stage to perform.  
  • Attire: 5th grade students will wear black Basalt Band t-shirts, black pants, and black shoes.  All other grades have decided what to wear within their small groups so please discuss this with your child.  
  • Student Responsibility/Behavior. All students are responsible for themselves.  They need to be sure to bring their instrument, music, reeds, drumsticks, or any other equipment that they'll need.  They are also responsible for watching the clock for their warm-up and performance times.

Parents - we need your help!-- We still parent volunteers and silent auction items!
Silent Auction: The majority of the money that we make from this event comes from our Silent Auction.  Each year, we have an awesome selection of items including gift certificates to local restaurants, concert tickets, crafts, getaways at local hotels, and much more.  We need your help in procuring items for our silent auction. Sponsorships: Similar to Silent Auction items, we are also in need of sponsorships.  This is simply asking businesses to purchase ad space in the Joy of Music program.  There are different levels of sponsorship. Do you own a business?? Cake Auction: One of the most entertaining parts of Joy of Music is the cake auction. Throughout the night, students auction of cakes and it is a riot!  We’ll need cakes donated - whether you bake them yourself, ask a business to donate one, or just purchase one at Whole Foods or City Market.  All cakes are accepted and they go toward a great cause!

Parent Volunteers: Have experience with planning for large events?  Maybe you don’t have any event-planning experience but are willing to help out?  Please let me know! Currently, this large event is being planned by about 8 parent volunteers and myself.  We really could use your help - remember, many hands make light work. There are many ways in which parents can help, both big and small.  Please shoot me an email if you’re willing to pitch in - the band community would greatly appreciate it!
