Band General Information
Beginning in 5th grade, student can elect to join our Basalt band program, which serves over half the student body in 5th through 8th grades at Basalt Middle School. Currently there are over 300 participants in the grades 5-12 program. Students additional audition for Colorado honor bands, including All Valley and District Honor Bands. The program offers over 20 performances annually, ranging from sporting events to street performances to formal concerts. Formal band concerts include all grades in one evening so that students can see the magnificent progression of skills and learning over the years from never-ever fifth graders to accomplished high school musicians. The recruitment rate of rising 4th graders is around 88% of students, and the high school band has more than doubled in size since Mr. Lenio began teaching four years ago. New students can choose to play flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone, tuba, and percussion. In 2017, Mr. Lenio was a semi-finalist for a Grammy Music Educator of the Year Award.
BMS Goes to New Orleans in 2018!
This trip is for 2017/18 band students who will be in 7th and 8th grade. Annually, the band takes a trip to Glenwood Caverns at the end of the year as well.
PALS Summer Program
The Aspen Music Festival and School offers an awesome opportunity for music students in the valley known as the P.A.L.S. program. P.A.L.S. stands for “Passes and Lessons Scholarship” and is available to students in the Roaring Fork Valley each summer. If your son or daughter applies and is accepted into the program, they will get free passes to world-class Aspen Music Festival concerts over the summer and 10 one-on-one lessons with an Aspen Music Festival student. Aspen Music Festival students are some of the best musicians in the world and are generally completing their Masters or Doctoral degrees in performance of their specific instrument. The P.A.L.S. program is a really wonderful chance for students to experience incredible music performances and learn from some of the best musicians in the world! http://www.aspenmusicfestival.com/more/programs-local-youth/summer-programs/pals
- JOIN BAND! Students in 4th grade will be contacted in the spring. Rising 4th graders should sign up for an instrument for 2016/17 using this form.
- BAND VIDEOS. The BMS band concerts can be viewed on the BMS YouTube Channel. Click here.
- PLAY IT FORWARD. Students willing and ready to challenge themselves to play harder music can talk to Mr. Lenio about playing with the grade above them. This successful initiative allows students to advance to more difficult music.
The choir program has made incredible strides since director Brittany von Stein came on board. In 2017, she received the Outstanding Young Educator Award from the Colorado Music Educators Association.
Over 150 students from grades 7-12 participate in girls' and boys' choirs at the middle school level and in symphonic and chamber choirs at the high school. At the middle school level, the choir program begins in 7th grade as an exploratory class and continues in 8th grade as an elective for boys' and girls' choirs. Over half of all 8th graders typically choose to take this popular class. The BMS choir concerts can be viewed on the BMS YouTube Channel. Click here

ADDITIONAL MUSIC PROGRAMMING
In addition to our band and choir programs that run continuously from middle school through high school, Basalt students regularly receive visits from Aspen Music Festival & School's visiting musicians who perform, offer instruction to students, and answer questions about careers in music. Students can also participate in the following associated programs:
PALS PROGRAM. This amazing summer program allows our students to practice with Aspen Music Festival and School summer students and also receive a pass for entry into the festival concerts. Application deadline is in early spring.

THE BASALT STREETHORNS is a new initiative taught by Mr. Lenio at the high school level. Students perform genre-crossing "social music" or music that brings people together, ranging from '70s funk to pop. Music is learned by ear without sheet music or arrangements. Musicians play at community-wide functions and events throughout the valley such as First Fridays in Carbondale, and they were recently invited to perform at the renowned Jazz Aspen Snowmass Labor Day Festival. BMS students can "play it forward" and perform with the StreetHorns when ready.
